Rust Grip® Specifications and Uses Print E-mail

Uses

  • Encapsulate and seal lead-based paints, asbestos, or other hazardous materials
  • Corrosion and weathering protection. Rust Grip® is UV-controlled and is not affected by hostile environments
  • Overcoat rusted areas to prevent and control further corrosion. Rust Grip® will seal out any contact with moisture and air or chemical pollutants that breed corrosion activity
  • Prime metal with Rust Grip® before over-coating
  • Protect floors to prevent wear and damage, whether concrete, metal or other materials
  • Anti-slip coating when combined with aggregates, for use around high traffic areas
  • Protection from acid splash or pooling. Rust Grip® will not allow acids to penetrate to affect the surface
  • Proven/tested under ASTM as a "water-barrier" over concrete, block and masonry.

Application

Although Rust Grip® can be applied by non-professionals, SPI recommends using a SPI certified applicator.

Preparation

  • Surface must be clean and COMPLETELY DRY, with no loose debris or particles, dirt, oil, films or residues of any kind. Rust Grip® will cover surface rust and other coatings if they are fully adhered to the surface
  • Stir well, as the metallics tend to settle out before use. If application is slow requiring several hours, restir every 30 minutes.

Application methods

  • Airless or pot sprayed: tip size .015 - .017
  • Non-rusted steel: apply in one coat using crosshatch method
  • Rusted steel: apply in two coats using crosshatch method
  • Apply first coat to work into rusted, pitted, porous, irregular shapes, seams and cracks to allow penetration.
  • Within 30 minutes (if hot and humid) or up to 4 hours or even next day (if cool or cold), overcoat with second coat to assure no surface pin holes. The first coat penetrates and leaves pinholes to anchor itself.
  • For other surfaces apply in two coats
  • Roller or brush: apply in two coats
  • Add an additional coat for heavily rusted vertical surfaces

Applied rate

  • Rusty - 200 sq. ft./gal. (18 sq.m./gal.) (two coats - applied 350 - 400 sq ft./coat)
  • Non-Rusty - 300 sq. ft./gal. (27 sq.m./gal.)

Film thickness

  • Wet: Rusty - 5-8 mils (125-200 microns). Non-Rusty - 6 mils (150 microns)
  • Dry: Rusty – 4 mils (100 microns). Non-Rusty - 3 mils (75 microns)

Temperature

  • 32 degrees F (0 degrees C) – 200 degrees F (93 degrees C
  • 72 degrees F (22 degrees C best

Dry times

  • 1 hour to touch at 72 degrees F (22 degrees C)
  • Overcoat immediately after surface is dry to touch
  • Must be overcoated within 2 hours or within 1 hour after surface is dry to touch)

Full cure

  • 21 days

Precautions

  • Rust Grip® is so tough it will not wash off hands using solvents after 30 minutes
  • Do not leave unused portion of pail opened for longer than 4 hours

Limitations

  • Silver / grey in color. Rust Grip® cannot be tinted because of metallics in the formula.
  • Not for use over wet or moist surfaces. Surfaces must be COMPLETELY DRY
  • Not for use in situations of constant underwater exposure
  • Not recommended for use around high ammonia levels
  • Not for use on food preparation surfaces that are in direct contact with foodstuffs
  • Rust Grip® has excellent coverage and appears to be very well applied only after one coat because all the surface looks a very nice silver/grey color. You cannot see the pinholes from the first coat and this causes some applicators to think it is "good enough" and not apply the second coat as instructed.
  • Cannot be used in conjunction with organic zinc
